Eat & Drink
With ocean views in every direction the Tannum Surf Club, located on the main beach, is an ieal spot for an afternoon drink with a view or a classic surf club meal. For takeaway, Tannum Beach Fish & Chips located on Pacific Ave. is always a great go-to. When you’ve got an appetite, a visit to Truffle Pig for Lunch or dinner is a must. They’ve got a great range of burgers, pastas and other pub classic style mains. We’re a sucker for a great burger and our pick here is the interestingly named “Harry Porker” burger, a delicious combination of homemade BBQ pulled pork, bacon, slaw & gherkins in a soft bun. If you want to do your own cooking, the BBQ and Camp Kitchen facilities on site are great, and there are also free BBQ areas located up on the main beach which provide a great alternative spot.
To Do List
In this tropical climate you’ll no doubt be ready to swim pretty quickly, and we love the pool on site at the park. It’s particularly well shaded by both trees and an overhead sail in one part of the pool, which helps for those of us who can sometimes forget to be sun smart. Tannum Main Beach located about 900m up the Esplanade is the best spot for a beach swim and a day relaxing with a towel on the sand. There is a beach located across the road from the park which is perfectly fine to swim in, but we do prefer the main beach. If you’re into Kitesurfing then bring your gear as this is a popular spot. On the first Saturday of each month the Beach Arts Music (BAM) Markets run along the Esplanade just up from the park. Here you’ll find interesting arts and crafts, delicious food and enjoy some live entertainment. If you’ve got one on hand, be sure to bring a picnic rug and enjoy the day out. If you’re keen on fishing, whilst there are many spots around Tannum Sands and nearby Boyne Island, we think it's best to prioritise a visit to Lake Awoonga, roughly 20 minutes drive away. This is one of the very best spots in Australia to catch Barramundi. A visit to Heron Island is a must, you’ll need to drive about 15 minutes to Gladstone Marina then hop on the ferry that departs daily at 9:30am, taking two hours to get to this picture-perfect spot surrounded by coral reef and home to a wide variety of wildlife and marine life. Speaking of animals, as you’re wandering around the park, keep an eye out for the beautiful peacocks that enjoy roaming the grounds.
Heads Up
Whilst the park is located right on the water, Tannum Sands Beach itself is about a ten-minute walk up the Esplanade and in our opinion, the better spot for a swim.
