Eat & Drink

Home to a thriving cafe, bar and restaurant scene and with close proximity to the Goldfields Wine Region, Castlemaine is a go-to destination for those who travel to eat and drink. The Mill is a fantastic concept, a shared space for restaurants and shops located in the old Castlemaine Woollen Mill. Within The Mill you’ll find Boomtown Wine, a shared winemaking space with a collective of small batch winemakers who source fruit from nearby Central Victorian sites. There’s a cellar door and bar and they also offer lunches on Saturdays with rotating options in a ‘pop-up’ style. Whilst you’re at The Mill we highly recommend heading to Sprout Bakery and Long Paddock Cheese to stock up on some delicious artisan local goods to enjoy back at the park. Castlemaine is home to several fantastic pubs and our favourite is the Bridge Hotel, which offers pub classics with a twist and a focus on local producers. They’ve also got a reputation for their music program so be sure to check the gig guide before you visit. If you’re keen to stock up on provisions to cook at the park or take on your onward journey, the Castlemaine Farmers Markets are held on the first Sunday of each month at Western Reserve, which you’ll find at the other end of the main street.

To Do List

Beyond eating and drinking, The Mill district is also well worth a visit for checking out local crafts and art. The Castlemaine Vintage Bazaar is around 2,000 square metres and is full of an eclectic collection of trinkets that will have bargain hunters and treasure seekers alike occupied for hours. If you’ve got some creativity in you that needs to be unleashed, a painting or drawing class at Studio Baxter (also located within The Mill) is a fantastic experience and open to all skill levels. The Castlemaine Art Museum has a significant permanent collection of paintings, sculptures, photography and prints, many of which hold historical significance and also is home to rotating exhibitions, often with a focus on indigenous art and culture. If you’re keen to soak up the outdoors, a walk through the neighbouring botanical gardens should be high on your list, or to get the heart rate up a bit higher we recommend the 5.5km Garfield Waterwheel to Welsh Village loop where you’ll encounter old mineshafts, birdlife and flowers set along a moderately challenging trail.

Heads Up

Powered Sites are dotted through various areas of the park and all offer different aspects. If you prefer a quieter spot and are happy to be away from common areas and amenities, request Sites 11-21 which sit on top of the embankment stretching down to the creek. Sites 67-73 or 82-85 are your best bet for proximity to all key facilities within the park.
