Eat & Drink
Conveniently located about 5 minutes walk from the park is Oh Dang! Espresso, our favourite spot for a morning coffee and often something to eat too both at breakfast and lunch time. If you’re there for breakfast and it’s on the menu, make sure to try the Brioche French Toast that comes with one of our favourite combos - maple bacon and maple syrup. Open for Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner and with an expansive deck overlooking Lake Illawarra, Club Windang is the perfect venue to visit at any time of the day. We particularly love getting down there for a late afternoon or sunset drink. There’s lots of great options if you make the drive into Wollongong which we often like to do particularly for a dinner out. It’s hard to go past Harbourfront Seafood Restaurant with its incredible views and delicious fresh seafood to match. If you’re cooking on site there’s several sheltered BBQ areas and a great camp kitchen and with several shops nearby there’s no concerns if you haven’t come stocked up on provisions.
To Do List
When it comes time for a swim, one side of the park faces directly onto Lake Illawarra which is a calm spot and perfect for a swim no matter your age or hopping onto a Kayak or SUP to explore a bit further. Directly across the other side of the lake you’ll find Stand Up Paddleboard Shellharbour who offer both SUP lessons and rental. If you’re wanting to get out into the surf, then on the other side of the park you’ll find access to Windang Beach. It’s patrolled from late September to Anzac Day (25th April). The beach is also one of the best spots in the region for surf fishing, and you’ll likely find both Salmon and Mulloway. If you’re looking to explore the area further then head north and a short drive away you’ll reach the bustling town of Wollongong which has plenty to offer. We particularly love to take a walk through the Botanical Gardens. Head south and you’ll find some interesting coastal towns, one of our favourites is Gerringong which is about 25 minutes drive away and has a particularly beautiful beach set against rolling green hills.
Heads Up
Within the northern half of the park there are several annual/longer term sites which we know many people feel provides a different atmosphere than being amongst fellow holiday travellers, so if you do want to avoid this area then request a site in the southern half of the park.
