Whilst it might be known for its stunning beaches and water-based activities, the Sunshine Coast boasts some of the best hiking in Australia. Ranging from incredible ocean views to idyllic hinterland waterfalls, there’s something for all tastes and all levels of experience and fitness. Here are our favourite five.
1. NOOSA COASTAL WALK: NOOSA
An iconic path that showcases one of Australia’s most famous coastlines in all its glory, we couldn’t go past this as our number one. Stretching 10.8km return from Noosa Heads to Sunshine Beach, this glorious walk weaves through Noosa National Park and the surrounding coastline, with breathtaking ocean views and lush nature. Keep your eyes peeled for the koalas.
Difficulty level: Medium.
2. KONDALILLA FALLS CIRCUIT: FLAXTON
This trek is a hidden gem, situated amidst the lushness of the Kondalilla National Park. The centrepiece is an incredible 90-metre waterfall and one of our favourite inland swimming spots, so don’t forget your bathers. This is a fairly easy walk, however there are some rock stairs you’ll need to navigate if you want to get down into the water.
Difficulty level: Easy.
3. MOUNT COOLUM WALK: MOUNT COOLUM
One of the most visited trails in the region and for good reason. Get to the 208m summit and you’ll be rewarded with spectacular 360-degree views of the coastal area, including Point Cartwright and the Glass House Mountains to the south, the Blackall Range to the west, and Noosa Heads to the north. Don’t be fooled by the 1.6m distance, this is a steep walk and will be sure to get your heart pumping.
Difficulty level: Hard.
4. EMU MOUNTAIN SUMMIT WALK: PEREGIAN BEACH
Set against the shimmering blue backdrop of Peregian Beach, Emu Summit is a walk where you don’t need to put in a huge amount of effort to be rewarded at just 1.1km return and with quite a gentle gradient. Despite its beauty, this walk remains less discovered than others in the region so you’ll never need to worry about crowds.
Difficulty level: Easy.
5. FIG TREE WALK: KENILWORTH
A lush rainforest walk where you’ll be in the historic company of 150 year old Moreton Bay Fig Trees. Whilst you’ll no doubt spot the Australian Brush Turkeys, the animal highlight on this walk are the occasional packs of butterflies that can be spotted in the canopy. For those travelling with their four legged friends, note that this is one of the few trails in the region where dogs are allowed.
Difficulty level: Easy.
