Eating & Drinking

One of the perks of staying here is how close you are to Ballina’s good food and coffee. We usually start the morning with a short drive over to Old Quarter Coffee Merchants, a local favourite that roasts its own beans. The flat whites are excellent, but if you’re into filter or batch brew, this is one of the best spots in the region. They do simple breakfasts too, with the ability to ‘build your own avocado toast’ adding sides like Dukkha, Byron Bay Mozzarella, Local smoked ham.

For lunch, we’re big fans of Tam’s Kitchen, a relaxed Vietnamese spot that does fresh, flavour-packed dishes without any fuss. Located within Ballina’s central shopping centre, the pho is consistently good, but the crispy pork banh mi is the thing we keep going back for. It’s an easy option whether you’re travelling as a couple or juggling a hungry family.

Dinner-wise, it’s hard to beat a classic pub meal at the Henry Rous Tavern. It’s casual, friendly and exactly the kind of place you want after a day exploring the Northern Rivers. We usually end up ordering something simple — a schnitty, a steak or fish and chips — and sitting out on the terrace with a cold drink. If you’re here over a weekend, it’s worth checking if they’ve got live music on.

Back at the park, cooking your own meals is just as easy. There’s a well maintained Camp Kitchen with everything you need to throw together a simple dinner, plus a BBQ area that’s ideal for relaxed evenings outdoors.

To Do List

One of the first things we point people toward is the Big Prawn, because it’s impossible to miss and very Ballina in the best way. It’s a quick stop, but it’s one of those fun little markers that tells you you’ve arrived on the Far North NSW Coast.

If you’re after something a bit quieter, the Richmond River is only a few minutes away and great for a morning stroll, a bit of fishing or just sitting by the water with a coffee. The shared paths along the river are flat and easy, making them ideal for families and anyone who wants a gentle walk with a view.

For beach time, Lighthouse Beach is our go to. It has plenty of space to spread out, consistent surf for confident swimmers and a long stretch of sand for walking.

If you’re keen on a little exploring, Byron Bay is an easy day trip. It’s about 30 minutes up the coast and gives you plenty to choose from: cafés, boutiques, beaches and the Cape Byron walking track if you’re up for a bit of a climb. We like going early to beat the crowds, grabbing breakfast in town and then wandering up to the lighthouse for those sweeping ocean views. Fun fact: it is the most eastern point of mainland Australia.

Heads Up

The Village is largely a mix of permanent residents and longer term visitors but all the short-term camping is situated in the holiday end of the Park, which helps to retain that classic caravan park vibe.
