Eating & Drinking
When we’re on the road we’re always excited to try a new local bakery and whilst our expectations were high, the Barcaldine Bakery surpassed them. This classic country bakery serves up delicious sweets (the choc hedgehog is a favourite), a range of delicious pies, sandwiches and more.
There’s several pubs in town but our favourite is the Union Hotel, a venue with a sense of history having held a hotel license at the same location for over 130 years. It’s a great spot for a cold drink at the front bar or a counter meal from the restaurant, which also offers a great kids menu.
If you’re cooking within the park you’ll have a well stocked Camp Kitchen as well as BBQs to choose from. Depending on the time of year, the park often runs a weekly burger night - check with reception on your arrival if you’re lucky enough to be here to enjoy it.
To Do List
Barcaldine holds a significant place in Australia’s labour movement, symbolised by the Tree of Knowledge. This iconic ghost gum, central to the 1891 Shearers’ Strike, now features a striking memorial following its preservation efforts. Sticking to this theme, you can also visit the Australian Workers Heritage Centre, an engaging museum dedicated to the contributions of workers and the history of labour movements across the nation.
Nearby Barcaldine you’ll find various stops along the Lake Dunn Sculpture Trail, a 200km loop that winds its way through the surrounding region and features 40 pieces of unique artwork, inspired by the region and showcasing all parts of outback life.
Whilst this is in the middle of outback Queensland, Barcaldine is somewhat famous for its Rec Park, a 1100m long lake that is a popular spot for boating, water skiing and wakeboarding and holds various competitions throughout the year and is open to the public daily for all activities. Even if you’re just keen on a swim to cool down, there is a roped off swimming area.
Heads Up
Whilst Barcaldine has a dry and mostly warm climate, it can get cool overnight in the winter months. Don’t forget to pack something to keep you warm!
