Eating & Drinking

Getting into High Country is all about disconnecting with the hustle and bustle. One great way to do this is to dish up your own feast at the Park. You’ll have access to a fully equipped camp kitchen - previous guests have even been known to cook their freshly caught trout.

For a cosy local coffee and breakfast, just 5 minutes down the road, Taggerty General Store is your go-to café‑store hybrid. It’s a top pick for a laid-back start to the day.

If you’re after a bigger range of options, head to Alexandra (15 minute drive). Grant St. Grocer is a local favourite for a reason – great coffee, elevated café meals, and a small providore section stocked with wine and pantry goods from around the region. The outdoor seating is perfect if you’re travelling with kids.

If you’re in town and passing through before a day of Alpine activities like we were, Alexandra Bakery has excellent pies and pasties. We bought a loaf of their fresh sourdough and packed a picnic.

For a hearty pub meal, head 10 minutes south from the Park to the Buxton Hotel. Cold beers, generous mains, and a warm country vibe make it a good spot to recharge after a hike or a day on the river.

If you’re staying over the weekend, check out Bonfire Station Microbrewery in the countryside just outside Taggerty. It’s a family-run venue with its own craft beers and ciders, local wines, wood-fired pizzas, and a relaxed beer garden that buzzes during Sunday sessions.

To Do List

This park is built for fun, and there’s so much to keep yourself and family occupied during your stay but there’s also a heap of adventures outside the park’s walls to explore.

Head out for a hike in the Cathedral Range State Park (just minutes away from BIG4 Taggerty). You’ll be rewarded with outstanding views.

Directly from the Park’s doorstep, you can hit the Acheron River for a paddle, swim, trout-fish.

If you’re venturing with a 4WD or Mountain Bike the Rubicon Valley and neighbouring state forests will be your paradise.

For those of us who prefer the slightly more indoor adventures, nearby Alexandra (mentioned above) has a range of quaint local shops to explore.

In winter, head up to Lake Mountain (45 minute drive). You can go cross-country skiing or take a snow hike. Kids (and adults) can hit up the Resort’s snow play area for a toboggan or snowman building competition.

Heads Up

If you’re planning a winter visit, make you bring warm bedding/clothes. The river valley nights can get extremely chilly.
