If you’re sticking to the park for a meal, the communal cooking setup is a highlight. There’s a rustic, carport-style Pioneer kitchen that’s great for a social cook-up, along with all-weather BBQ facilities.

For your morning caffeine fix, head straight to Café Melbourne in the heart of town. Tucked inside a beautifully restored heritage building known as The Depot, it has an industrial-chic feel with high ceilings and a sunny courtyard. The coffee is consistently excellent and the cabinet is always packed with fresh, in-house baking. We spent a long morning here just soaking up the atmosphere and browsing the specialty shops sharing the building.

When lunch rolls around, make your way to Shortland Wharf. It’s a bit of a local institution where you can grab some of the freshest fish and chips in the region. There’s something undeniably right about eating a scoop of chips right on the edge of the water, watching the boats come and go.

For a quality evening meal, Gastronomics on the main street is the pick. It’s a stylish but relaxed spot known for its fresh, locally sourced menu and impressive cocktail list. It’s perfect for a more refined night out after a day spent hiking.

If you’re after a drink with a side of history, The Junction Hotel (also known as the GBD or Grahamstown Bar & Diner) is where you’ll find the locals. It’s a classic gold-rush era pub with plenty of character, cold beer, and a lively atmosphere, especially if there’s live music on the weekend.

At the park, there’s plenty to keep everyone busy without leaving the gates. You can challenge the family to a round of mini golf, hit the games room for some table tennis, or take a dip in the outdoor pool. If you’ve brought your gear, the fish cleaning station is a handy addition after a morning out on the Firth of Thames.

In town, the Thames Goldmine Experience is a must. It’s an authentic look into the 19th-century gold rush where you can head into the tunnels and see a massive stamper battery in action. For something a bit more active, the Hauraki Rail Trail is right on your doorstep; it’s an easy, flat ride that’s perfect for all fitness levels. We recommend hiring one of the park’s e-bikes to make the journey even smoother.

For a short drive, head into the Kauaeranga Valley. It’s home to some of the best swimming holes in the region — Hoffman’s Pool is the local favourite for a freshwater dip. If you’re up for a challenge, the Pinnacles Walk is one of the most popular hikes in the country. It’s a steep climb involving stairs and ladders, but the 360-degree views of the peninsula from the top are absolutely worth the sweat.

If you’re here on a Saturday, don’t miss the Thames Market in Grahamstown. It’s a classic community market with local produce, arts, crafts, and a great atmosphere. If your visit coincides with November, keep an eye out for the Steampunk Themed events—Thames is the steampunk capital of New Zealand and the town really leans into the Victorian-sci-fi vibe.

While the park is the perfect base for the Pinnacles hike, remember that the last 9km of the road to the trailhead is unsealed. It's well-maintained, but take it slow — especially after rain. Also, if you’re planning on staying overnight at the Pinnacles Hut, you’ll need to book your bunk months in advance during the peak season.
