As a starting point, this part of South Australia is known for producing some of the best fruit and veg in all of Australia, and Waikerie particularly is known for its citrus fruits. The town is surrounded by over a million citrus trees. Make sure you try the local produce wherever you can!
We’re sure you’ve seen a Nippy’s flavoured milk or fruit juice grace the shelves of many stores around Australia, and their home is in Waikerie. They have a kiosk set up in the heart of the town of Waikerie, where you can purchase from their full range of delicious beverages as well as stock up on some fresh locally grown fruit.
Newland Bakery is a classic country bakery with all the usual suspects on the menu. You can’t go wrong with anything off the pie menu (the steak and pepper was particularly chunky and delicious), of course followed up with a vanilla slice. It’s located just outside of the town centre, so makes a great spot to stop if you are in the car and heading east.
Oscar’s Bistro located at the Waikerie Hotel is a great spot for dinner and open seven days a week. They have a broad menu including classic pub fare, pizzas and a variety of grilled meat and seafood dishes - there’s something for everyone. If you don’t want to dine in, they also offer most of their menu for takeaway.
For those who prefer to dine at the accommodation, there's a well equipped Camp Kitchen area including multiple tables set in an undercover shed, as well as multiple BBQs dotted throughout the property.
Occupying an elevated, clifftop position in the centre of town, the Waikerie Silo Art mural is a must-see attraction that offers striking views both from town and across the River Murray. The twin silos, painted on both sides by artists Garry Duncan and Jimmy Dvate, showcase the inspiring theme "Healthy River, Healthy Community," reflecting the deep local connection to the river.
The mighty Murray River winds through the town of Waikerie, and is a great spot for a stroll and to take in this classic Australian scenery. You can combine this with a visit to the Silo Art by following the Waikerie Clifftop Walk and Trail, a 2km walk which has several lookout points across the Murray and the region's floodplains, as well as additional local art.
There’s plenty of activities on the water as well. Head out on a kayak, SUP, canoe or boat. If you haven’t brought your own, you can hire a canoe from Woody’s Variety Store. If you’re keen to cast a line, depending on the time of year you might catch Murray Cod, Golden Perch, Silver Perch, and Bream.
When you’re ready to cool off after a warm Riverland day or an afternoon spent on the park's Pedal karts or in the Playground, you’ll find an inviting swimming pool a short walk from your site or cabin!
This area is known for its particularly warm summers, with temperatures often exceeding 35 degrees celsius. Make sure you pack sunscreen, and stay hydrated!
