Your guide to this area

Eating & Drinking

The park's own cafe serves up some of the best pizzas you will ever eat during their pizza nights, while the onsite shop stocks fresh bread daily, milk and other emergency supplies you might need for camp kitchen cooking. We loved the convenience of grabbing morning provisions without leaving the park grounds.

Just a two-minute walk away, Sunset Tavern is the legendary beer garden where a full menu is available for both lunch and dinner 7 days a week. The outdoor dining area facing the Gulf of Carpentaria delivers stunning sunset views alongside delicious succulent steaks, fresh local seafood and classic favourites such as steaks, burgers or fish and chips. We recommend booking ahead, especially for sunset dinners when the outdoor tables fill up fast.

For the freshest catch in town, Ash's at The Point Cafe & Store is a stone's throw from the park and serves up friendly staff, pleasant surrounds with their famous fish and chips. The attached general store is handy for last-minute supplies, though it can feel a bit cramped during peak times.

Seabreeze Point Store offers several grocery lines at reasonable prices with fresh fruit and basic provisions when you need to stock up without driving into town.

To Do List

The park itself invites you to unwind with a drink under shady trees, swim in the sparkling pool, or cook in the camp kitchen, while the boat ramp is right next door with plenty of fish and mud crab caught. The kids will likely gravitate towards the playground and swimming pool the moment you arrive, giving parents a chance to appreciate the lots of shady trees throughout the grounds.

Just beyond the park gates, the mighty Gulf of Carpentaria beckons with world-class fishing opportunities.

February to October is Barra season when hundreds of fishing hopefuls venture here for prized Barramundi, along with threadfin and blue salmon, golden snapper, grunter, black jewfish, goldspot cod and groper, mackerel, queenfish, trevally, catfish, bream, flathead and whiting. Kerry D Fishing Charters runs half and full day fishing charters with all fishing gear supplied, morning & afternoon tea and lunch for the full day on their fully shaded deck.

For a different perspective on these waters, Croc & Crab Tours offers

morning cruises lasting three hours taking in the Norman River, Six Mile Creek and Karumba Port where the crew lift up crab pots to inspect the catch, while the two hour early evening cruise, includes food, and heads out to Sand Island widely regarded as the best place to see Karumba's legendary sunsets.

The Les Wilson Barramundi Discovery Centre provides amazing secrets of the mighty barramundi at the only hatchery in the world to breed the Southern Gulf strain, with an interactive and state of the art Interpretive Centre providing the history, stories, lifecycle and habits of these sought-after fish. The 4km Karumba Heritage Walk stretches from Karumba to Karumba Point, where you will discover pioneers, commercial fishing, World War 2 squadrons and the Catalina with signage telling stories from the first inhabitants, explorers, environment, economy and community.

Heads Up

The team wet the roads in the park down twice a day which helps keep the dust down, making for a much more pleasant stay during the dry season.
