Eating & Drinking

For morning coffee, we crossed the Macquarie River and headed straight to Drip, a local favourite that lives up to its reputation. The coffee is excellent and we couldn’t resist pairing it with a fresh Portuguese tart to kick off the day. Another reliable option nearby is Church Street Café and Bar (CSC), which works just as well for breakfast as it does later in the day.

If you find yourself back there for lunch or dinner, CSC offers a seasonal menu alongside freshly brewed coffee, cocktails and a solid selection of local wines. It’s an easy, flexible spot that suits everything from a casual bite to a longer, laid-back meal.

For something social, Devil’s Hollow Brewery is a great choice. This family-friendly venue serves up craft beer alongside woodfired pizzas, burgers and modern pub-style dishes. It’s relaxed, lively and a good option if you’re travelling with a group.

If you’re after something a little different for dinner, The Vietnamese House stood out for both the quality of the food and the service. The menu is full of fresh, flavour-packed dishes and it’s a great change of pace if you’re craving a bowl of sliced beef pho or a tasty stir fry with rice.

To Do List

A stay in Dubbo isn’t complete without a visit to Taronga Western Plains Zoo, one of Australia’s most impressive wildlife experiences. This open-range zoo sits just outside town and is home to hundreds of rare and endangered animals, including giraffes, rhinos, elephants and big cats. For a truly immersive experience, hire a bike or electric cart and explore the zoo’s 5.3 kilometre circuit, which lets you move through the habitats at your own pace.

For a dose of local history, step back in time at the state heritage listed Old Dubbo Gaol. Operating for 119 years from 1847 to 1966, the gaol brings its stories to life through preserved buildings, artefacts and engaging displays. You can wander the grounds independently, join a guided tour, experience a twilight ghost tour, or catch one of the theatrical performances held during school holidays.

If your visit lines up with a market weekend, the Dubbo Farmers Markets are well worth a stop. Held on the lawns of Macquarie Lions Park on the first and third Saturday of each month, the market attracts around 60 stallholders selling fresh produce and regional goods. It’s a great place to stock up on local flavours, grab something to eat, and soak up the community atmosphere that makes Dubbo such an easy place to enjoy.

Heads Up

Dubbo’s summer temperatures can climb, particularly in January and February. Planning outdoor activities for the morning and taking advantage of the pool in the afternoon makes a big difference.
