A peaceful bushland escape on the Tasman Peninsula, just minutes from the Port Arthur Historic Site and the southern coast.

Eating & Drinking

This is one of those spots where it pays to come prepared. Being tucked away on the Tasman Peninsula means dining options nearby are limited, but that’s part of the charm.

Within the park, there’s everything you need to cook up a storm. The well-equipped Camp Kitchen includes stoves, microwaves, fridges, and plenty of space to prepare and share a meal, while the BBQ areas and fire pits make for relaxed evenings under the stars.

If you’re craving a barista coffee or something light, the cafe inside the Port Arthur Historic Site is your closest option, just a few minutes up the road. They serve solid coffees, sandwiches, and simple hot meals with a view across the harbour.

If you’re after a proper sit-down meal, On the Bay Restaurant is just down the road from the Park at Stewarts Bay Lodge. The setting alone is worth the visit, with big windows looking out over the water and forest. The rotating menu leans on local Tasmanian produce all paired nicely with a drinks list that showcases Tasmania’s leading winemakers and brewers.

To Do List

At the top of the list is the Port Arthur Historic Site, just a few minutes from the park. Wandering through the ruins and restored buildings gives you a real sense of Australia’s convict past, and the guided tours add layers of history that bring it to life. Stay for the ghost tour after dark if you’re up for something a little spine-tingling.

For those keen to stretch their legs, the Three Capes Track is one of Australia’s great walks. The full multi-day trek is spectacular, but even shorter sections — like the Cape Raoul or Cape Hauy tracks — offer breathtaking coastal scenery, sheer cliffs, and the feeling of being on the edge of the world. Both are full day hikes so make sure you have the right equipment.

A different perspective comes from the water with Tasman Island Cruises. These award-winning eco tours take you along the dramatic coastline beneath the towering dolerite cliffs, where you might spot seals, dolphins, or even migrating whales during the cooler months.

To round things out, The Tasmanian Devil Unzoo offers a fascinating twist on the traditional wildlife park. Instead of cages, animals live freely in their natural environment — you can hand-feed kangaroos, meet Tasmanian devils, and learn about local conservation efforts. It’s engaging, educational, and great for all ages.

Heads Up

The roads leading into the Park from Hobart wind through some spectacular scenery, so it’s worth arriving a little earlier in the day to take it slow and enjoy the drive.
