Reflections Burrinjuck Waters Holiday Park

The on-site General Store is the heart of mealtimes here, especially after a long day on the water. We grabbed wood-fired pizzas one night and fish and chips the next, the kids worked through soft serves on the deck, and we watched boats trickle back to the ramp as the sun dropped behind the hills. Stock up on bread, milk and a few essentials while you are there, because the nearest supermarket is a solid drive away.

Coming in or heading out, Barney's at Bookham is the obvious stop on the Hume. Big breakfast plates, proper coffee and friendly country service kept pulling us back, and on day two we ducked in early and took sausage rolls and slices straight back to the lake for breakfast number two.

For something a little more polished, set aside a long lunch for Poachers Pantry at Hall, around 50 minutes south east towards Canberra. Their Smokehouse Cafe pairs house-cured meats and grazing platters with cool-climate wines from the on-site Wily Trout vineyard, and the leafy garden setting is a lovely contrast to lake-shack dinners.

Closer to home in Yass, Clementine Bakery does a beautifully crusty sourdough and morning pastries that disappear by mid-morning, while the historic Royal Hotel Bowning is the nearest classic country pub for a parma and a pint in front of the fire on a cool night.

Most days here begin and end at the water. Lake Burrinjuck fans out beneath the park with a boat ramp, jetty and sheltered swimming bays right on your doorstep, and we watched fishers haul in golden perch and the occasional Murray cod at first light. Even without a boat, kayaks and SUPs glide easily into the quiet bays, and you can happily fill an afternoon casting from the bank.

Back in the park, the kids gravitated to the playground, table tennis and frisbee golf, and the school holiday activity program kept them busy while we read in the afternoon sun. Evenings turned into fire pit time, with kangaroos drifting across the grass at dusk and a sky full of stars once the camp lights wound down.

A scenic 45 minute drive around the lake leads to Careys Cave at Wee Jasper, a genuinely impressive limestone cave system with guided tours that the kids found thrilling. The drive itself is part of the appeal, ribboning between hills with the Brindabella Ranges hovering in the distance.

Walkers will find the Hume and Hovell Track on the doorstep, with day-walk sections following the lake and the Goodradigbee River. Pack a lunch and a swimsuit, because some of the best quiet dipping spots are tucked along these stretches.

Set aside half a day for Yass and the Murrumbateman wine country about 50 minutes north, where cellar doors at Clonakilla, Helm Wines and Eden Road open most weekends and the historic main street of Yass rewards a slow wander. If your stay lines up with the Murrumbateman Field Days in mid-October, expect a proper country fair with working dogs, vintage machinery and local food stalls.

We learned that the lake has two very different personalities through the year, with warm months bringing water sports and golden sunset swims, and the cooler weeks turning the place wonderfully peaceful with mist over the water at sunrise and a much quieter kiosk.
