A very short walk (we’re talking less than a couple of hundred metres) away, you’ll find Sea Salt, a great spot for morning coffee and something to eat whilst taking in some water views. It’s hard to go past something sweet for breakfast when on holidays and here we love the waffles, served with maple syrup, strawberries, & ice cream.
Almost directly next door to Sea Salt (and therefore equally convenient) you’ll find The Deck Cafe Restaurant & Bar, occupying an impossible-to-beat waterfront location looking out over Soldiers Point Marina and open daily for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Our tip is to book an early dinner (dependent on the time of year you visit) and enjoy the sunset whilst eating some delicious seafood.
For some other dining options you can go for a drive along the coastline and visit one of the various townships, our favourite spot is Nelson Bay. Of course, there’s great cooking facilities within the park where you’ll find both a Camp Kitchen and BBQ area.
This area is a beach lovers paradise, with 26 separate beaches making up the broader Port Stephens area. Whilst Sunset Beach a short walk away is a beautiful spot for enjoying the west facing sunset, our favourites for a dip are likely a short drive away. Top of the list is Zenith Beach, approximately 25 minutes away by car. This 400m slice of paradise wedged between Tomaree Mountain and Stephens Peak has to be seen to be believed. A slightly shorter drive away is Birubi Beach, famous for its imposing sand dunes where you can also go Camel riding.
There’s plenty of fun to be had if you stay within the park, with the resort-style pool an ideal place for a dip when you don’t feel like journeying to the beach. Kids will also love the playground, and there’s a tennis court if you want to get the blood pumping. It’s easy to get out on the water thanks to the nearby boat ramp, and boat hire is possible from the marina a short walk away if you haven’t come with your own vessel.
If you happen to be here during the Humpback Whale migration season (from early May to Late November) keep your eyes peeled, you’ll more than likely see one of these incredible creatures breaching out of the ocean as they pass through.
The various beaches and hamlets in the area aren’t always as easy to travel between on foot as Google Maps suggests - make sure you double check with a local or staff at the park.
