Destination Guide

Lakes Entrance, VIC

Spectacular scenery and a unique system of inland waterways make this coastal retreat popular amongst all types of travellers.

Where To Stay In Lakes Entrance

NRMA Eastern Beach is our pick of the local holiday parks thanks to it’s convenient location, wide range of accommodation options and kid-friendly atmosphere. Accommodation wise there’s something for everyone with Unpowered and Powered Sites as well as Ensuite Sites, and a range of Cabins that can sleep up to eight people. We love how all the Villas have their patios with dining areas and BBQs. Kids will always be entertained whether it’s splashing around the well sized pool, heading to the bouncing pillow or cruising around the park in one of their pedal karts. The park itself is conveniently located if you’re a beach-goer, with a very short walk finding you at Eastern Beach.

Where To Eat & Drink In Lakes Entrance

Our favourite spot for breakfast or lunch is Albert & Co, dishing up cafe classics in a beautifully designed and kept venue on the Esplanade. If you’re a fan of Baked Eggs, we highly recommend getting here for breakfast - theirs are one of our favourite dishes. Serving up incredibly fresh, locally caught seafood on a unique pontoon location floating on the Lakes Entrance Harbour, Sodafish is our pick of the restaurants in the area if we’re keen to head out for a longer lunch or dinner.

What To Do In Lakes Entrance

Lakes Entrance is home to a unique system of inland waterways and multiple lakes crossing over each other and feeding out to the beach. This makes for both spectacular scenery and a range of great water-based activities to do. If you're a beach lover, you can’t go wrong simply spending a day out on the beach, choosing between Lakes Entrance Main Beach and Eastern Beach. Both are surf beaches but still great for a swim, and are patrolled through all school holidays and the busier periods of the year. If you’re keen to fish you’re in the right place, with Bream and Flathead both in abundance as well as a variety of other fish. For a land based activity, head to the Griffiths Sea Shell Museum and Marine Display to learn more about the local marine life and check out their extensive collection of shells.

The Essentials

Lakes Entrance is a well stocked town and you’ll find multiple supermarkets, pharmacies and all the essentials along the main strip of Church St. If you’re in need of camping or caravan gear, head to Footbridge Camping & Disposals or Lakes Auto Parts.

The Drive

As always, we give you the rundown on the drive you’ll take from the three closest capital cities.

From Canberra - 422 km on highway the entire time, this is a drive that can be covered in a day (less than five hours) if you’re up to it.

From Sydney - The drive from Sydney is 701 km if you head inland through Canberra, but we think it is well worth the extra 20 km and about 50 minutes driving time to take the beautiful coastal route. You’ll need a stop (likely overnight) with either route, our pick would be Bermagui on the coast.

From Melbourne - An easy 318 km along the Princes Highway through Gippsland and you’ll find yourself in Lakes Entrance.
