Where To Stay In Tathra
With its premium beachfront location and welcoming atmosphere, NRMA Tathra Beachfront Holiday Park is the pick of local accommodation choices. Welcome to all ages and with plenty of space, this is the sort of place you’ll feel comfortable with your kids running around in knowing that you’re surrounded by like-minded people. With an absolute beachfront location on a patrolled beach, this is a great spot for the kids to safely go for a swim. This is a park with plenty of interesting activities going on incluing a weekly pizza night which we think is a great touch. There’s a broad range of accommodation on offer including Powered and Unpowered Sites, Cabins, Villas, Glamping and Tiny Houses.
Where To Eat & Drink In Tathra
One of our favourite spots is the Tathra Hotel, serving classic pub fare but with an innovate twist in an incredibly well maintained 17th century building with a modern extension. Go for the classic Schnitzel well washed down with any number of beers from the inhouse “Humpback Brewery”. If you’re after a pizza (takeaway or dine in), Drift is a fantastic option and conveniently located near the three caravan parks in town. For a morning coffee, our favourite spot is Wild Orchid - grab a takeaway and stroll across the road to the beach to take in the fresh sea air and magnificent views.
What To Do In Tathra
There’s nothing wrong with revolving your day here around the beach, and Tathra Beach is one that caters for all. With plenty of room on the sand for activities and a gentle enough surf that it’s suitable for the younger ones, you can’t go wrong. If you’re looking to get a good sense of the coast around and potentially spot some distant marine life, the Tathra Headland walk is just 300m long and suited to people of all abilities with plenty of educational signage along the way. For those seeking some local history, we highly recommend a visit to the historic steamer wharf, located at the end of the Headland Walk. On the trail down there you’re every chance to spot some loud seals.
The Essentials
Tathra is a town with good amenity so you won’t need to worry about picking things up along the way. We particularly like the local supermarket which stocks a range of interesting produce including some delicious deli goods. You’ll also find a local pharmacy with a good range of stock if needed. For caravan and camping gear you’ll neeed to travel to Bega, which is just under a 20 minute drive away.
The Drive
As always, we give you the rundown on the drive you’ll take from the three closest capital cities.
From Sydney - Straight down the coast and 423 km from Sydney, we adore this drive. There’s any number of great places you can stop, be it to stretch the legs or for a stay of a night or two, but given its location at almost the halfway point we’re going to recommend the incredible Jervis Bay area.
From Canberra - At 245 km this is also one that can be done without stops, an easy drive through the Snowy Valley along the Monaro Highway.
From Melbourne - A beautiful drive that starts inland then heads straight up the coast totalling 604 km. If you’re keen to stop to stretch the legs, Bairnsdale is almost exactly halfway and a town with plenty to offer. For overnight stays, we’d recommend the slight detour into the beautiful Lakes Entrance. This will only add 8 km to your journey and is well worth it for the stunning views.
