Touchwood Cafe is a charming spot for morning coffee and cake, breakfast, lunch and everything in between. The Avocado Toast which comes with avocado, feta, beetroot hummus and two poached eggs is a healthy option if you’ve got an appetite, but if you’re just after a lighter snack to go with your coffee, the scones here are famous for good reason! Hursey Seafoods is your go-to for fresh, locally caught seafood. They offer a high quality restaurant experience if you choose to dine in (go for one of the platters), as well as a takeaway menu which will likely be the best fish and chips you’ve ever had. This is a family run business who have been running a fishing fleet in this area since the 1970s - wander down to the Stanley Port and you’ll likely find one of their iconic red boats moored there. The Stanley Hotel Bistro is a gorgeous spot for a sunset drink on their elevated deck with views over the ocean, they do a great job with their food as well and are worth a stop for lunch or dinner.
From your accommodation you can’t miss The Nut, a 143 metre high ancient volcanic plug that emerges out of Bass Strait and towers over the town of Stanley. There’s a 2km walking loop at the top that offers breathtaking views, to access it you’ll need to either go via a very steep 140 metre high path, or by chairlift. Whilst we always encourage exploring on foot, the chairlift is a great way to get a different perspective on this region. Stanley is famous for its colony of little penguins, and your best chance to catch a glimpse of these adorable creatures is by heading to the lookout at Godfrey’s Beach at dusk. This is a purpose built viewing platform and always draws a crowd so you can’t miss it. Directly out the front of the park you’ll find Tatlows Beach, 400m of white sand and stunning turquoise waters that are well protected from the prevailing westerly wind.
Don’t forget to keep your eyes peeled whilst you’re walking around town, Stanley is home to some of the best-preserved colonial architecture in Tasmania, making it feel like stepping back in time.
