Eating & Drinking

For a proper coffee, we like to head across the Pioneer River to Primal Coffee Roasters. It’s a favourite with locals for good reason, serving consistently excellent coffee in a relaxed, welcoming space. It’s an easy stop to start the day before heading out to explore, or to refuel after a morning of sightseeing.

For lunch, Buddy Boy in Mt Pleasant is always a great time. The menu is adventurous yet crowd-pleasing, with generous portions and plenty of choice, whether you’re after a bowl of pad thai noodles, butter chicken or the miso-glazed salmon.

For something different, book in for dinner at Aahaar – Indian Kitchen & Bar. The flavours are bold, the dishes are beautifully balanced, and everything we’ve tried has been spot on. It’s a great option if you’re craving some spice.

If craft beer is your thing, Goanna Brewing is well worth a visit. This local brewery has a laid-back vibe and a rotating range of beers that showcase the region’s relaxed, creative side. It’s an easy place to settle in for a tasting paddle or a quiet drink before heading back to the park.

Back at the park, self-catering is simple thanks to the Camp Kitchen and BBQ facilities.

To Do List

One of Mackay’s biggest drawcards is the Bluewater Lagoon, a huge, free public lagoon right in the city centre. It’s perfect for cooling off in the tropical heat, with multiple pools, shallow splash areas for kids and plenty of shaded spots to relax. We found it ideal for an easy afternoon when you want a swim without worrying about tides or stingers.

For a coastal wander, Marina Beach is an easy choice. This long, open stretch of sand is great for a walk at sunrise or sunset, with views back toward the harbour and out to the islands. It’s a calm spot to slow things down, breathe in the sea air and enjoy Mackay’s laid-back coastal lifestyle.

If you’re up for an early start, a trip to Cape Hillsborough National Park is an absolute must. About a 45-minute drive north, it’s famous for its sunrise beach walks where wallabies and kangaroos emerge onto the sand as the sun comes up. Beyond the iconic wildlife moment, there are beautiful coastal walks, lookouts and quiet beaches that make the drive well worth it.

Between safe swimming at Mackay’s Bluewater Lagoon, relaxed coastal walks along Marina Beach and one of Queensland’s most memorable national park experiences nearby, it’s easy to balance downtime and adventure, all from a comfortable base back at the park.
