Eating & Drinking

Our favourite spot for a morning coffee is Station Coffee House, located in the heart of the town centre. They serve up delicious coffee and smoothies, as well as having a variety of great breakfast options. If you’re a sweet tooth, make sure you try the French Toast.

If you’re keen to visit a few wineries, you’ve come to the right place with several great options in the surrounding Southern Highlands area. Our favourite is Artemis Wines, who are known for their Pinot Noir but also have a distillery on site producing a range of spirits. Their cellar door is open for tastings (of both wine and spirits) 7 days a week from 11am – 4pm with local cheese and charcuterie boards also available. If you’re there on a weekend, they’ll also be serving up a range of gourmet wood fired pizzas. No matter when you attend, it is advisable to book ahead.

If you love a good country pub it is well worth making the 20 minute drive from Mittagong to the Sutton Forrest Inn. Set in a tranquil village surrounded by beautiful woodlands and farms, their outdoor area is the perfect place to sit on a sunny day and take in the pristine views of surrounding rolling hills with a cold drink in hand.

Back in the town of Mittagong, there’s plenty of interesting dining options available when it comes to dinner time. If you’re after something more casual, you can’t go past a counter meal at the Mittagong Hotel. Our favourite spot is Paste Australia, the sister restaurant of a Michelin starred restaurant in Bangkok, that serves up a vibrant, modern take on Thai cuisine.

To Do List

The town of Mittagong is a quaint spot with plenty to explore. We highly recommend making some time whilst you’re here to just wander around the township itself and see what you can discover. Make sure you include Lake Alexandra Reserve, a public park with a flat walking track surrounding the lake.

When you’re ready to get the blood pumping a bit further, there’s several great hikes and walks in the region. Visiting the Forty Foot Falls is a must do for any outdoor enthusiast, and the best way to do so is via the Red Trail. This trail runs just shy of 7km out and back, and will take you by the base of Mount Alexandra before heading under the Hume Highway and reaching the Nattai River. The falls themselves are particularly impressive if there has been heavy rain in the preceding days/weeks.

If you’re keen to explore another nearby town, we highly recommend making the short drive to Bowral - a charming town known for its boutique shops and lush gardens. It also happens to be the birthplace of Australian cricket legend Sir Donald Bradman, and is home to a museum named in his honour and has an interesting permanent exhibit dedicated to both Sir Donald Bradman himself and the game of cricket.
