For coffee, we’re blessed to have the on-site Great Lakes Café. It quickly became our go-to each morning, with consistently good coffee and a range of food options. The bacon and egg rolls wraps are a lifesaver on early starts, and the shaded outdoor seating is a relaxed place to ease into the day. It’s also ideal when you want something quick before heading out on the water.
When lunchtime rolls around, we usually head across the bridge to Forster where you’re spoilt for choice. Tartt. Café is a favourite when we want something fresh and modern — their burgers, salads and sandwiches are always spot on, and the vibe is relaxed even when it’s busy. For something more indulgent, Palms Artisan Bakery is excellent. They call themselves “the bread people” for good reason, and the pastries are perfect for a treat back at the park or a late-morning snack between swims.
For dinner, Spice Monkey is hard to beat. It’s right on the water with sweeping lake views and a menu that blends Japanese and Southeast Asian flavours. We’ve had everything from punchy curries to sushi rolls here, and the kids’ menu makes it an easy pick for families. If we’re in the mood for something brighter and livelier, Si Señorita delivers coastal Mexican with big flavours, great tacos and margaritas that hit the spot after a day on the lake.
Back at the Park, the Camp Kitchen has everything you need to put together a proper meal, with plenty of prep space, undercover seating and BBQs. Some of our favourite evenings have been spent cooking here while looking out toward the water, with the kids burning off the last of their energy at the playground or pool.
You really don’t have to go far here. With Wallis Lake right on the edge of the park, it’s easy to spend hours exploring the vast lagoon at your own pace. We love launching a kayak or SUP straight onto the calm inlet, and for those who prefer to stay dry, the jetty is a peaceful spot to cast a line and watch the world drift by. Back inside the park, the swimming pool and playground keep the kids entertained, and there’s loads of open space for a casual game of cricket or a quiet picnic in the shade
If you feel like exploring further, Booti Booti National Park is only a short drive south and is one of the region’s natural highlights. The rainforest meets the coastline here, creating a network of walking tracks with incredible views. The Seven Mile Beach walk is our pick, especially at sunrise when the light hits the water and you often get the whole beach to yourself.
A visit to Forster Main Beach is an easy addition to the day. It’s patrolled in summer, great for swimming and perfect for learning to surf. The adjacent ocean-fed rock pool is ideal for younger kids or anyone who prefers gentler water. It’s a spot we return to often, whether for a morning swim or a relaxed afternoon by the sand.
If you prefer something quieter, Pebbly Beach is a lovely alternative. With its natural tidal pools, snorkel-friendly corners and laid-back vibe, it’s one of our favourite places to slow down. On certain days you can even spot dolphins cruising just offshore.
The park sits on the Tuncurry side, so you’ll need the car for major supermarkets and most dining options in Forster. The drive across the bridge is quick and easy, but not something you’ll typically walk.
Check In is 12pm for Sites, 2pm for Cabins and Check Out is 10am for all accommodation.
