Eating well here is easy, whether you feel like cooking in or heading out for something hearty. Back at the park, there are BBQs and a well set up Camp Kitchen that make group meals simple, especially after a big day on the water.
For supplies and a proper coffee, the country town of Kilcoy is just a 10 minute drive north and quickly became part of our daily rhythm. Coff and Co Bakery was our go-to. We stopped in for reliable coffee and fresh bread on the first morning and took it straight back to the park for a lakeside breakfast. It was so good we returned the next day, this time diving into their famous pies and a few sweet treats that barely made it back to the car.
When it comes to dining out, you really can’t go past the Exchange Hotel in Kilcoy. It’s a classic country pub with plenty of character and a menu that sticks to what it does best. Steaks, burgers and parmigianas are the staples, all done well, and there’s also a solid range of pizzas if you feel like something a little different. There’s a kids menu for the little ones, and a good selection of beers and ciders on tap for those keen to settle in for the afternoon.
With Lake Somerset right on your doorstep, most days naturally revolve around the water. Somerset Dam is surrounded by rolling hills and open farmland, and the park’s position directly on the shoreline makes it incredibly easy to enjoy. There’s a boat ramp within the park, so early morning launches are effortless. The calm, flat water is ideal for water skiing and wakeboarding, and it’s just as popular with anglers chasing the dam’s well known Australian Bass. In warmer months, it’s the perfect place to cool off with a swim or simply relax by the water’s edge and take it all in.
If you feel like stretching your legs, make the short drive into Kilcoy and visit Yowie Park, a local favourite that’s well worth a look. The park is centred around a statue representing the legendary Yowie, a mythical creature said to roam the rugged country to the north of town. It’s a peaceful spot to wander, let the kids burn off some energy, and soak up a bit of local folklore along the way.
Golfers can bring their clubs and head to Kilcoy Golf Course, located less than 10 minutes from the park. This relaxed 9 hole country course offers a fun challenge and a friendly atmosphere, making it an easy addition to your stay whether you’re a regular player or just keen for a casual round.
For a change of pace, plan a day trip to nearby Esk and the charming precinct around Glen Rock. It’s a classic country town experience, with a main street lined with cafes, gift shops and antique stores. We enjoyed popping into the Glen Rock Gallery to browse local artworks before settling in for a coffee and a slow wander through town.
This is a peaceful, nature-first destination with space to spread out, which means you won’t find supermarkets or major dining within walking distance. Kilcoy is only a short 10 minute drive away and has everything you’ll need for supplies, meals and fuel.
Check In is 2pm and Check Out is 10am for all accommodation.
