Eat & Drink
Some of the very best seafood in the country is caught in this area and often found on the plates of the finest restaurants in Melbourne and Sydney. You can get direct access to it from the team at Portland Seafoods where you’ll find the freshest crayfish, prawns, oysters and abalone you’re likely to come across. We highly recommend grabbing what takes your fancy and heading back to cook at the great facilities at the park. Speaking of seafood, of course in a town like this with access to such great produce there’s several fish and chip shops. Our favourite is Henty St. Fish and Grill which is just a short walk away. Our favourite spot for a coffee is Twelvefold, where you’ll also find a delicious takeaway menu - our go-to is a toastie or one of the gourmet pies on offer.
To Do List
Portland is a prime position to spot whales during their migration season from May to October and we think one of the best places to do your whale-watching from is the Cape Nelson lighthouse area, located directly next to the park. Pictures can never do justice to the experience of seeing these incredible creatures breaching from the ocean with your own eyes. Speaking of majestic sea creatures, there are several seal colonies in the area and the best place to spot them is on the seal colony walk, a 6km return stretch across cliffs in nearby Cape Bridgewater, approximately 15 minutes drive away. If you’re here in the warmer months of course make your way down to one of the various local beaches for a dip. The closest to the park is Nun’s Beach which isn’t patrolled, however it is well protected and only has small and gentle waves. To learn more about the town's history whilst taking in some great views along the way, be sure to jump on the Portland Cable Tram which rolls through a 7.4km route along the foreshore. It departs daily every 75 minutes with the first departure at 10am and last departure at 3pm.
Heads Up
Whilst the park is located directly on the ocean it sits on a cliff which means that the beach is not directly accessible from the park. That said, the entry path to popular Nun’s Beach is less than 500m walk up the road.
