Eating & Drinking

Our mornings at Surfrider always started with a short drive to Cherry Black Coffee Roasters. The coffee here is top notch — smooth, rich and roasted on-site. The staff have that relaxed coastal energy that instantly puts you in holiday mode. We sat outside in the sunshine with a flat white and a toasted turkish bread sandwich and watched the morning roll by.

Peggy’s Bistro at the Warilla Sports Club Club is our pick for a family dinner. It’s one of those easy, no-fuss spots where the meals come out quick, the portions are generous and everyone finds something they like. The schnitzels are a hit (crispy on the outside, juicy inside), and the kids menu keeps things simple.

When we’re in the mood for something with a little spice, Harbour Thai Restaurant is our go-to. The Panang curry is creamy and full of flavour, and the staff are always happy to adjust the heat for those who don’t love spice.

For those nights when you just want an easy feed after a beach swim, Riggy’s Takeaway always delivers. Burgers, fish and chips, and calamari packs that taste even better eaten out of the paper while sitting on the grass near the surf club.

If you’d rather stay close to home, the park’s Camp Kitchen and BBQ area make cooking a breeze. There’s plenty of space to prepare dinner while the kids play nearby, and nothing beats eating outside with the sound of waves rolling in across the road.

To Do List

There’s plenty to keep you busy around Surfrider if you can tear yourself away from Blacks Beach across the road from the Park. We loved heading out for a morning walk along the Lake Illawarra Art Trail at Reddall Reserve. It’s a scenic track (walk or cycle) that winds past colourful murals, sculptures and interpretive signs telling stories of the area and its aboriginal heritage. It’s perfect for a stroll or a family bike ride, especially in the morning before the heat of the day.

A short drive south brings you to Bushrangers Bay Aquatic Reserve, one of those hidden coastal gems locals like to keep quiet. The calm, clear water makes it a brilliant spot for snorkelling — we saw schools of fish weaving through the sea grass. It’s contained, peaceful and feels wonderfully untouched.

Back in town, Shellharbour North Beach is ideal for families. It’s patrolled in summer, the waves are gentle enough for younger swimmers, and there’s a grassy park right behind the sand for picnics or a quick game of cricket.

When you’re ready for a change of pace, head into Shellharbour Village for a wander. There’s a good mix of boutiques, gelato shops and casual dining (mostly along Addison Street). The evenings are lovely when the sea breeze drifts through and everyone’s out for a walk after dinner.

Heads Up

The sea breeze picks up most afternoons, so mornings are best for swims, SUPs or setting up on the sand. Afternoons are perfect for BBQs back at the park or a stroll into town for gelato while the day cools off.
