If you’re like us, one of the things we most look forward to during our driving holidays is the chance to find hidden gem local bakeries along the way. Whether you’re after a sweet treat or in pursuit of the perfect country pie, look no further. Here are our five favourite finds from travelling in the Northern Rivers area.

1. BRUNS BAKERY: BRUNSWICK HEADS

Why we love them: Whilst this incarnation of Bruns only opened in 2017, it already feels like an institution and is hugely popular thanks to the high quality of baking that is shown across their range of pastries, cakes, sourdough and pies.

Our favourite dish: A fresh croissant made from scratch in house. Simply superb.

Where to find them: 15 Fingal St, Brunswick Heads NSW

2. WARDELL PIES: WARDELL

Why we love them: This legendary pie shop has a cult following in the Northern Rivers region and for good reason. You’ll find all your classic pies as well as a few more left-of-centre options. We recommend trying both.

Our favourite dish: The Garlic Prawn Pie might not sound like your typical pie filling, but if you’re a seafood lover just trust us and give it a try.

Where to find them: 42 Richmond St, Wardell NSW

3. SUNDAY SUSTAINABLE BAKERY: BYRON BAY

Why we love them: Located in the heart of Byron Bay, this bakery that leans more towards the ‘artisan’ end of the scale than the ‘classic country bakery’ end serves up delicious baked goods both sweet and savoury whilst retaining a strong environmental conscience, endeavouring to be as close to ‘Certified Organic’ as possible across all their baking.

Our favourite dish: The Granny Smith Apple Cinnamon Turnover is a delicious take on a classic.

Where to find them: 101 Jonson St, Byron Bay NSW

4. DAVE’S BAKEHOUSE: KYOGLE

Why we love them: Located well off the beaten track in the hinterland town of Kyogle, Dave’s is exactly what you expect when you think of a local country bakery with coffee and delicious baked goods as well as freshly made rolls and burgers.

Our favourite dish: Something about a place like this makes us feel like a classic Ham and Salad roll and that is exactly what we go for when we visit Dave’s.

Where to find them: 73-75 Summerland Way, Kyogle NSW

5. THE BAKE HOUSE: YAMBA

Why we love them: In the charming town of Yamba you’ll find this locally owned and operated gem pumping out all your favourite backed classics, some more daring pies and a variety of salads.

Our favourite dish: The little lemon meringue tarts are so good if you’re like me, you’ll end up ordering multiple every time you go.

Where to find them: 24 Coldstream St, Yamba NSW
