Where To Stay In South Durras
NRMA Murramarang Beachfront Holiday Resort is located directly on Mill Beach and offers Powered and Unpowered sites, a variety of Cabins and Villas as well as Glamping. There’s an onsite bistro and poolside bar which are great additions given dining options in the area are relatively limited. Kids will love the pool, playground and the chance to hire one of the pedal carts and cruise around the roads of the park. This park is also a favourite for those who travel with a boat thanks to the on site boat ramp making it very easy to launch into the ocean.
Where To Eat & Drink In South Durras
There’s relatively limited options in the area for dining and drinks, so we recommend bringing your own provisions and enjoying them at your accommodation. If you’re staying at our recommended accommodation, NRMA Murramarang Beachfront Holiday Resort then there’s some great options at the onsite restaurant and bar - we’re huge fans of their pizzas and kids will love the fish and chips. The South Durras General Store also has a cafe if you’re picking up some provisions and keen to get a coffee or a sweet treat.
What To Do In South Durras
South Durras sits right at the edge of Murramarang National Park which has some amazing walks where you’ll experience native flora and fauna. You’ll find Eastern Grey Kangaroos, Lyrebirds and a variety of other native birdlife. The park is also famous for its Spotted Gums which stretch right to the edge of the coastline. If you’ve got keen fishers in your group, Durras Lake is a well known fishing spot. You’ll find bream, whiting, flathead and prawns when they are in-season (September to April). There’s several great beaches but our favourite is Cookies Beach where you’ll find reasonably well sheltered turquoise waters making it great for kids. You’re also likely to spot some Eastern Grey Kangaroos sunbaking on the shores and dolphins further out in the ocean.
The Essentials
This is a quieter town but you’ll find a General Store which has some basic provisions. Batemans Bay is about 15 minutes drive away, there you’ll find several supermarkets and pharmacies as well as a BCF for all your gear needs.
The Drive
As always, we give you the rundown on the drive you’ll take from the three closest capital cities.
From Canberra - A relatively quick and easy drive of 161 km along Kings Hwy.
From Sydney - Straight down the coast for 268 km and you’ll arrive from Sydney. About half way you’ll find Gerringong which has plenty of options if you want to stop for a coffee or a meal.
From Melbourne - Through Gippsland and then up the coast along the Princes Hwy for a total distance of 769 km. There’s various options for a stop which will likely be overnight. We recommend Lakes Entrance in Victoria, or if you can make it a bit further along, Eden in NSW. If you want an alternative route, you can go inland skirting around the edges of both Victoria and NSW alpine regions, this is longer in distance at 802 km but often a shorter drive. We’d recommend Beechworth for an overnight stay.
