Eating & Drinking

For coffee, we always begin the day at Recess Coffee in Griffith. Their batch brew is unreal, rich without being heavy, and it’s the kind of place where the baristas know exactly what they’re doing. It’s a simple, reliable stop before heading out to explore the capital. Another option nearby the Park is ONA Coffee House in Fyshwick. Their award winning house roasted beans are born from Melbourne coffee culture, and they never miss the mark.

When we’re staying close to home, the Monaro Tavern, right inside the village, is a super convenient option. It’s relaxed, friendly and ideal for an easy night when you don’t feel like heading into the city. A cold drink, a hearty meal and no need to grab the car — it’s exactly what you want after a long day on the road.

Another option over the other side of town is The Old Canberra Inn in Lyneham. Built in 1857, it’s one of the oldest licensed pubs in the ACT and has the atmosphere to match. The drive to get there is worth it for the range of craft brews on offer. There’s cosy fireplaces in winter, a sunlit beer garden in summer, and a menu full of elevated classics like burgers, schnitzels and slow-cooked specials. It’s family friendly, relaxed and a great taste of Canberra history.

If we’re heading into the city for something fun and unique, Lazy Su in Braddon is still one of our top choices. It blends Korean, Japanese and American flavours into playful dishes that are perfect for sharing. The wagyu cheesesteak spring rolls and crispy pork belly bao are regular orders for us, and the place always buzzes on weekends, so bookings are recommended.

If you prefer to cook for yourself, the park’s Camp Kitchen and BBQs have everything you need for easy self-catering.

To Do List

Staying at Canberra Holiday Village puts you in a great spot to explore some of the ACT’s most iconic experiences. One of our favourite outings is Mulligans Flat Woodland Sanctuary, just a short drive away.

For sweeping views over the city, Mount Ainslie Lookout is an easy must-do. It’s only around 15 minutes from the park, and whether you walk up or drive straight to the top, the panoramic view over the War Memorial, Lake Burley Griffin and Parliament House is one of the best in Canberra.

If you’re interested in Australia’s history, the Australian War Memorial is an essential part of any Canberra visit. It’s moving, incredibly well curated, and somewhere you can easily spend a few hours exploring exhibitions, galleries and the commemorative courtyard.

In spring, we love heading to Tulip Top Gardens, just north of the city and only minutes from the park. It’s a burst of colour during September and October, with thousands of tulips, blossoms and landscaped paths creating a peaceful escape. If you’re travelling at the right time of year, it’s absolutely worth adding to your list.

Heads Up

The park sits in a quiet outer suburb, which keeps things peaceful, but it does mean you’ll be driving for groceries, dining and most sightseeing.
