You will notice immediately that the facilities here are in a league of their own. The park features a brand-new, architectural Facility Hub that feels more like a modern lodge than a traditional camp block. The split-level design houses a sleek camp kitchen and BBQ area where you can prepare a meal while looking straight out across Lake Whakatipu. It is impeccably clean and perfectly set up for anything from a quick breakfast to a full family dinner.
For your morning brew, head over to Life’s A Grind Espresso in Frankton. This retro coffee caravan is a local institution, serving up consistently excellent Allpress coffee with a side of genuine Queenstown hospitality. It is a simple, no-fuss spot where the baristas remember your order and the vibe is always upbeat, making it the perfect first stop before a day of exploring.
When you are looking for a quality sit-down meal, Sundays at Country Lane is the place to be. Set inside a beautifully restored 1930s church, it specialises in wood-fired Neapolitan-style pizzas and shared plates. The atmosphere is relaxed and social, with a sunny patio and a large lawn area where children can run around while you enjoy a glass of local wine. The sourdough bases are a highlight, as are the pecorino churros which are a bit of a local legend.
For a wholesome, casual option, Frank’s Eatery is a Frankton staple. They focus on ethical, local produce to create dishes that are nutritious and full of flavour. Whether you are after a big brunch or a fresh salad, the food is always honest and well-executed. It is a bright, airy space that works just as well for a quick bite as it does for a lazy afternoon catch-up.
To finish the day with a view, Altitude Brewing at the Frankton Marina is essential. This award-winning craft brewery offers what might be the best taproom views in the country. Grab a paddle of their latest brews and find a spot on the deck to watch the sun dip behind the mountains. It is incredibly laid-back, and captures the true spirit of the Queenstown outdoors.
If you have children in tow, they might never want to leave the park grounds. Between the massive jumping pillow and a custom playground, there is enough to keep them busy for hours. On rainy days, the indoor games room is a lifesaver, featuring a dedicated toddler area. For the adults, the private hot tubs are the real draw; they are perched to overlook the Frankton Arm and provide a front-row seat to the sunset over the mountains.
For a classic Queenstown experience without the parking stress of the CBD, hop on the Queenstown Water Taxi. It picks up from the Frankton Marina, just a short walk from the park, and whisks you across the lake to the main town pier. It is a scenic, affordable way to get on the water and offers a perspective of the Remarkables that you just don't get from the road.
Right at your doorstep is the Frankton Track, a section of the Queenstown Trail that follows the lake’s edge. It is a flat, easy 6km walk or bike ride into the town centre, passing through pine forests and past hidden lakeside jetties. If you prefer to head the other way, the trail leads toward the Kelvin Heights peninsula, which is home to a world-class golf course and a series of impressive lakefront sculptures.
On Saturday mornings, make your way to the Remarkables Market (running from October through April). Located at the Red Barn in Remarkables Park, it is a zero-waste market where you can pick up local crafts, fresh Otago produce, and excellent street food while listening to live music under the gaze of the mountains.
For a scenic half-day trip, the drive to Glenorchy is often cited as one of the best in the world. It is a 45-minute journey that hugs the edge of Lake Whakatipu, offering endless photo opportunities at spots like Bennett’s Bluff. Once you arrive, you can walk the Glenorchy Lagoon boardwalk or continue on to Paradise to see the ancient beech forests that served as filming locations for The Lord of the Rings.
While the park’s location is incredibly convenient for shopping and activities, it is worth noting its proximity to the Queenstown Airport. You will see (and hear) planes taking off and landing nearby during the day. Most guests find it fascinating rather than a nuisance, but it is something to keep in mind if you are a particularly light sleeper or looking for total wilderness silence.
