Eating & Drinking

Start your day with a walk through the town of Naracoorte and if you’re anything like us, first things first will be stopping for a coffee. Our favourite local spot is Corner Grounds Cafe, serving up delicious coffee both dine-in and takeaway, as well as a menu with breakfast and brunch classics as well as a range of sweet and savoury treats available from the takeaway cabinet.

For many, Naracoorte serves as a base to explore the Coonawarra wine region which has no shortage of options when it comes to wine of course, but also fantastic restaurants. It begins roughly 30 minutes drive from your accommodation, and conveniently, most of the wineries here can be accessed by the same stretch of road.

There’s several great options when it comes to visiting Cellar Doors and tasting wine. Wynns Coonawarra Estate is the biggest name in the region, and offers various tasting experiences showcasing current and back vintage wines as well as wines by the glass and cheese platters. Balnaves is a favourite of ours both for the wine and the setting, with their wine room overlooking a pond surrounded by rolling vineyards and over 900 rose bushes. There’s so much more to explore, so hit the road, stop in at a few spots and find a new favourite!

When it comes to food, our favourite spot is Hollick Wines, their “Upstairs at Hollick” restaurant was actually the first winery restaurant established in the region. The menu here is squarely focused on Italian cuisine, highlighted by handmade pastas.

Within the park there's both Camp Kitchen and BBQ options for you to cook up a storm.

To Do List

Food and wine is fantastic, but this town and region is well worth a visit even if that is not your focus.

The Naracoorte Caves National Park is home to stunning stalactites and stalagmites and is South Australia’s only UNESCO World Heritage listed site thanks to the extensive collection of fossils that were found here. There are several caves which can be explored both in a self-guided setting or by joining a tour, and we highly recommend the one-hour tour through Victoria Cave, where these fossils were found.

If you’re here in the warmer months then cool off with a dip in the Naracoorte Swimming Lake, located just 200m away from your accommodation. This spacious man-made, chlorinated lake ranges from 1m to 2m deep and features shallow sections for little ones, a diving pontoon, and an enclosed children’s area. Families can relax on the sandy beach or grassy spots, with plenty of shade so it never feels overcrowded. Note that this is only open during the summer season, ordinarily opening in late November and closing around Easter weekend.

There’s plenty of entertainment to be enjoyed without leaving the park, particularly for the kids. You’ll find a games room, giant games, mini golf, pedal kart hire and more.

Heads Up

Don’t be concerned if you haven’t come stocked up on provisions or there’s something you realise you need whilst on your trip, the town centre of Naracoorte is a short walk away and has a variety of shops to cater to most every need on the road.
