Eating & Drinking

Traveller’s Rest 1770 is the kind of place where you settle in, unpack your provisions and enjoy the simple pleasure of cooking outdoors. The BBQ Shelter is spacious and well set up, with toaster, microwave, kettle, a double sink for washing up and accessible double hot plate BBQs. There’s no fridge on-site, so bring an esky and plan ahead. The sheltered picnic tables are a lovely spot to sit and watch the bushland shift from late afternoon light into the stargazing night hours.

If you’re heading into town for your morning brew, 1770 Coffee is our pick. Less than 5 minutes’ drive along the main road into Agnes Water, they roast their beans locally and make a consistently excellent cup. We made it a morning ritual before heading out on our adventures for the day. They have a simple menu (we ordered a ham and cheese croissant), as well as a cabinet filled with sweet treats.

For a proper pub meal with an easygoing coastal vibe, make your way to Agnes Water Tavern. It’s an easy drive from the campground and has that classic Queensland pub feel with hearty counter meals, cold beers and a friendly crowd. If you’re in town on a weekend, the live music in the beer garden is a great way to wind down after a day in the sun.

When the mood calls for something simple and fresh, Coral Sea Seafood and Takeaway is the spot we keep going back to. Think freshly caught local fish, crisp chips and an easy seaside atmosphere that suits the laid-back rhythm of Agnes Water. It’s ideal for a casual dinner.

To Do List

A stay at Traveller’s Rest 1770 really starts with the experiences run from the property itself. We joined one of the BushTracks Eco Tours and it’s something we still talk about. These small-group walks take you deep into the surrounding bushland with guide Mike, who knows the landscape inside out. It’s an easy way to connect with the plants, birds and wildlife that call this place home, and the accessible bushland boardwalk gives everyone the chance to explore at their own pace. If you’re around in the evening, Mike’s Moonlit Tales is another highlight (running from 1 April - 31 Oct). You’ll sit under the night sky listening to stories from Mike’s 20 years’ experience working alongside indigenous guides in Arnhemland.

For a day on the water, a trip to Lady Musgrave Island with the Eco Certified team at 1770 Reef is absolutely worth carving out time for. Once you arrive, you’ll snorkel over vibrant coral, glide past turtles and see the Southern Great Barrier Reef at its unspoiled best. It’s one of the most memorable ways to experience this part of Queensland.

If you’re chasing something a little more playful, the iconic bright-pink 1770 LARC! Tours have been running for more than 30 years. These amphibious adventures are great fun for all ages, skimming across the shallows and sandbars around Bustard Bay. The guides strike that perfect balance of humour, history and local knowledge, and it’s a fantastic way to see the coastline from a different perspective.

Heads Up

As an off-grid campground, water hookups aren’t available on individual sites. If you’re staying two nights or more on a powered site, you can request a water refill at check-in.
