Eating & Drinking

For our morning coffee, we always head straight to Murphy’s Lane Coffee. It is only a short drive from the park and consistently pours one of the best flat whites in town. The baristas know their craft and the optional drive-through order and pick-up is an added bonus if you’re heading out on the road.

If we’re out around lunchtime, Burger Urge does great classic burgers that hit the spot, while The Vietnamese Guy Albury Wodonga is perfect when we want something fresher and lighter. Their pho and banh mi are generous, affordable and fast, making it a reliable option on busy days.

When we’re in the mood for something a little more refined, or have a special occasion worth celebrating, Miss Amelie is where we book. Set inside the beautifully restored Wodonga railway station precinct, it is one of those regional restaurants that could easily belong in a capital city. The menu leans modern European, with handmade pastas and seasonal dishes that make it well worth a special night out.

Of course, if you’d rather stay close to home, the park’s Camp Kitchen and BBQs make self-catering simple.

To Do List

A great Sunday outing is the Wodonga Creek Miniature Railway, set along the banks of Wodonga Creek on Gateway Island. It runs live steam and diesel miniature locomotives, traction engines and rolling stock, and it is great old-fashioned fun for the kids. The adjacent playground is perfect for a picnic or for letting the kids run around before or after your ride, making it an easy and charming family stop.

Flowing between the twin cities of Albury and Wodonga, is the mighty Murray River. The river precinct in Albury is an enjoyable place to spend half a day all year round. We love spending time at Noreuil Park where you can swim, kayak, paddle board or simply settle under the River Red Gums with a picnic. If you feel like stretching your legs, the peaceful Wagirra Trail follows the river for more than six kilometres and features interpretive signage about the Wiradjuri people as well as a series of sculptural works that highlight their deep connection to the river.

Just a short walk from the river, the Albury Botanic Gardens is a beautiful place to slow down. Established in 1877, the gardens now feature more than 1,000 plant species and winding paths beneath ancient trees. We love exploring the Heritage Walk, which highlights 19 significant sites and historic buildings, but if you’re travelling with kids, the children’s garden is the real highlight. With a life sized dinosaur, a fairy temple and even a troll cave, it has a magical, storybook feel that keeps little ones entertained while you enjoy the calm of the gardens.
