Honorbread Bakery, Bermagui

An artisan bakery that is globally inspired but obsessed with Australian produce, offering a range of delicious sweet treats, bread, sandwiches and some of the best coffee in town.

First Impressions

Nestled at the bottom of the main street in a smaller set of shops, the washed white walls of Honorbread and courtyard that houses a boules court, as well as beehives for honey made on-site, immediately signal that this isn’t your average country bakery.

The Offering

An artisan bakery that is globally inspired but obsessed with Australian produce. Of course, there’s a range of delicious breads (more on that later), but you’ll also find a variety of tasty baked treats on offer that range from a perfectly executed classic flaky croissant to something a bit more obscure. The “Mumbulla Mountain Bun” is the perfect example of this, taking inspiration from the traditional Swedish Cardamom Bun but using produce local to the Bermagui area. This is one of those sweet-but-savoury pastry delicacies that you’ll still be thinking of long after you finish it. There’s no shortage of other classics on offer with a wide variety of danishes leaning towards seasonal fruits.

On top of the variety of baked treats, Honorbread also offers various fresh sandwiches, toasties and salads each day on a rotating menu.

This isn’t the sort of bakery where you’ll need to bring your coffee from elsewhere. With their beans sourced from acclaimed roaster Single O, this is some of the best coffee on the coast.

You’ll Drive Back For

Writing this is somewhat like picking a favourite child, but I can’t go past the bread. Despite the plethora of tasty treats both sweet and savoury available, the bread is the star of the show here. There’s a huge range available, with everything from your traditional Country Loaf through to the more obscure Sechskornbrot - a German loaf named for its “many seeds”, in this case; Sunflower Seed, Sesame Seed, Linseed, Oats and Pumpkin Seed combine for a delicious and wholesome loaf.

Worth The Drive?

In a time where bakeries are bountiful in regional towns and most all of them lay claim to having the best something, Honorbread truly stands out. With its commitment to quality, artisan baking and celebration of all the great things that make Australia the incredible country it is, set in a charming location - it’s hard to fault. Whilst Bermagui itself is worth the drive due to everything it offers, a visit to Honorbread alone is Worth The Drive.
