Tathra Hotel, Tathra

A classic coastal pub with 270 degree ocean views, classic pub fare with a modern twist and an in-house craft brewery.

First Impressions
That view. Perched on top of the Tathra headlands, it’s hard to draw your eyes away from the sweeping 270 degree views of stunning sapphire blue waters shimmering in the sun. We’re lucky to be here in September and able to spot whales breaching not too far away. When you get over the view, you’ll notice that this is a building with some history to it - first built in 1888, the original facade has been beautifully maintained but also houses a modern extension.

The Offering
Classic pub fare but with a modern twist. The team at Tathra Hotel focus on great local produce, both to support those in the region and do their bit for sustainability by limiting food miles. There’s of course pub classics like a perfectly golden, crispy Schnitzel, but also some more daring and tasty options - we loved the “Octopus and Sausage”, a flavour packed combination of grilled octopus, pork and fennel sausage, cannellini bean puree, broccolini, charred lemon and lemon paprika garlic butter. Beverage choices are plentiful and for beer lovers, you’re spoiled for choice thanks to the range of beers freshly brewed by the team at Humpback Brewery, located on site (more on them below). If you have kids in tow don’t stress, there’s a great kids menu with all the classics ensuring your little ones are well catered for.

You’ll Drive Back For
I’ll refrain from going for the easy answer of “the view’ again here, as spectacular as it is. Luckily, it is perfectly complemented by the in house craft beers that come straight from “Humpback Brewery”, brewed on location. Having taken over what was once the pokie room, this independent craft brewer has a broad and interesting range of beers, with the pub serving 11 of them on tap at any given time for ample freshness. Ranging from lagers to stouts, there’s something for everyone, but our favourite is the “First Calf” Pale Ale - with a light body, crispy finish and plenty of flavour, this is an ideal summer beer.

Our Order
6 x Natural Oysters
1 x Salt and Pepper Calamari
1 x Octopus and Sausage
1 x Scotch Fillet
1 x ‘First Calf’ Pale Ale
1 x ‘Vienna’ Lager
1 x ‘Oceanview’ Draught
1 x ‘Killer’ Pilsner

The Drive
Most likely one with some stops along the way, but here are the three nearest major cities:

Canberra - 246km

Sydney - 424km

Melbourne - 605km

Worth The Drive?
You’d make the drive here for the view alone, but the bonus is a beautiful, historic pub with welcoming hospitality, an interesting menu that doesn’t just stick to pub classics and with a craft brewery in house to boot. Without a shadow of doubt, worth the drive.
