You don’t have to travel far south of Sydney to get to the beautiful coastal region of Illawarra, home to multiple national parks that will make you feel like you are an entire world away. Amongst them you’ll find some of the best hikes and walking routes in Australia.

1. MINNAMURRA FALLS WALK: BUDDEROO NATIONAL PARK
This scenic route has the spectacular Minnamurra Falls as its focus, an impressive 28m waterfall that cascades down jagged rocks surrounded by lush rainforest. The walk itself is a relatively easy one and made up of boardwalks and paved paths, making it suitable so long as you’re able to go the 3.5km loop distance. It is mostly flat though the areas that have an incline are rather steep. This is a popular trail all year round, so don’t expect any sort of secluded nature experience.

Distance: 3.5 km loop

Difficulty Level: Easy

2. BROKERS NOSE TRACK: DHARAWAL NATIONAL PARK
A relatively easy walk that offers some of the best views across the Illawarra coast to Wollongong. You’ll be amongst some incredible old native trees and be likely to spot various birds, including Lyrebirds if you’re lucky. Beware if it has been raining recently this track can get particularly muddy.

Distance: 4.5 km return

Difficulty Level: Moderate

3. CORANG ARCH: MORTON NATIONAL PARK
At 26.4 km, this is the longest of the hikes mentioned in this list but is incredibly rewarding for those who embrace the challenge. An easy to follow path where you’ll see free flowing rivers, cross through caves and enjoy incredible gorge views. This is a full day hike so don’t attempt this without experience, and make sure you pack plenty of food and water for stops.

Distance: 26.4 km return

Difficulty Level: Very Hard

4. ILLAWARRA LOOKOUT TRACK: BARREN GROUNDS NATURE RESERVE
A short and easy route. Don’t expect to see too much on the walk itself but the views from the lookout are some of the best you can find in the area and don’t require too much effort to get to.

Distance: 1.9 km return

Difficulty Level: Easy

5. SHE-OAK CROSSING WALK: BOMADERRY CREEK REGIONAL PARK
A diverse walk where you’ll see a great cross-section of what nature in the area has to offer. There’s plenty of interesting overhanging rocks and boulders, rock pools and even a weird to cross. On our walk we spotted several goannas but others have called out there are snakes at times so keep a lookout, particularly if you’re bringing your dog.

Distance: 4.2 km loop

Difficulty Level: Moderate
