Whilst the Northern NSW coastline is famous for its stunning beaches and world class surf breaks, there is a whole different world available for those going for a dip - freshwater swimming holes. From vibrant blue waters to lush rainforest locations, these stunning spots often remain under-the-radar. Grab your swimmers, pack a picnic and get ready to dive into these natural wonders.
1. ANGOURIE BLUE AND GREEN POOLS: YAMBA
What was once a quarry became a swimming pool when the miners hit a snag in the form of drilling into underground freshwater springs. Not so good for them, but great for us as this has become one of the most beautiful swimming spots in the region. This spot is particularly unique as despite being a freshwater pool, it is just metres away from the ocean. So close in fact, that you can hear waves crashing whilst you go for a dip. For thrill-seekers, there’s plenty of opportunities to jump off rocks or cliffs safely into these waters that are 10-15m deep, the majority of these are found at the green pools.
2. BEXHILL QUARRY: BEXHILL
These mesmerising, cobalt blue waters are like something out of another planet and are worth the trip alone just to gaze in awe. You can of course swim, and many people do, but we will note that if you intend to Swim here, do so at your own risk. Copper sulphate from the quarry is what gives the water its neon colour, but also increases the acidity of it to a level that is considered by some as harmful to swim in.
3. KILLEN FALLS: TINTENBAR
Located in the Byron Hinterland, the centrepiece of this swimming hole is 10 metre waterfall surrounded by lush rainforest. The area is very well shaded with sun poking through in the occasional gap in the canopy, giving this a mystical feel but also making it a great place to escape the heat. You can get a great view from the top of the falls, but if you want to go for a dip you will need to go down the steep rock that can be slippery at times, so take caution.
4. TEA TREE LAKE: TYAGARAH
A slightly different spot to others on this list, Tea Tree Lake is much larger and surrounded by native bushland rather than rainforest. This spot is easy to access and great for a picnic pre-dip. Don’t be put off by the brown tint to the water, this is not from dirt but rather oil from the surrounding system of tea trees which is meant to be great for your skin,
5. MINYON FALLS: NIGHTCAP NATIONAL PARK
If your number one objective is to find the most beautiful waterfall in the region, you’ve come to the right place. These stunning waterfalls plunge roughly 100 metres, and whilst you can get a killer view from the top, the journey down to the bottom is well worth it for a swim. Note that you will have to scale over some reasonably large boulders at the bottom to get into the water.
