In the mornings, we like to make the 15-20 minute walk along the waterfron into the main Port Pirie shops, here you’ll find our favourite coffee spot which is actually housed in a surf store - New Wave Surf Shop and Coffee Bar.
When it comes to eating or drinking out there’s plenty of options. Whilst there are several pubs in town our pick is the Portside Tavern which occupies a great location across from the water, has spacious seating both inside and outside and serves up consistent counter meals and of course, cold drinks. Angus and Co. is a classic steakhouse and conveniently located just 500m away from your accommodation. It’s only open on Friday and Saturdays but Carn Brae is a great spot to visit for a delicious woodfired pizza set in the grounds of a heritage building.
For cooking on site there are several BBQs available and an undercover area to enjoy a meal with your fellow travellers. Port Pirie is a well stocked town, so if you haven’t come with provisions you’ll be sure to find anything you need here.
Port Pirie was first settled in 1845 and has long been a vibrant industrial town, with a history built on zinc, silver and lead smelting. The wealth industry historically brought to the town means it is home to several beautiful heritage buildings, which are best explored by taking a self-guided walk along the 3.5km Port Pirie Heritage Trail loop.
Port Pirie Regional Tourism & Arts Centre is well worth a visit. Kids will love getting up close and personal with Shakka the Shark, a lifesize replica of this 5.5 metre shark, along with the original jaws and fin, that entered local folklore after becoming entangled in a snapper line in nearby Germein Bay. Here you can also get up close and personal with a shark without entering the water thanks to the Virtual Reality Shark Cage Diving exhibit.
If you’re keen to get in or on the water, Solomontown Beach is located directly next to the park. This man-made beach sits in Port Pirie river which feeds out the ocean, and is a safe and calm spot that is great for a swim, getting out on a kayak or SUP or even casting a line from the jetty.
Whilst the town of Port Pirie is an interesting place to settle and spend your time, many use this location as a base to explore the beauty of the Southern Flinders Ranges. One of our favourite spots to visit is Mount Remarkable National Park, which you’ll find a short 30 minute drive away. Here you’ll find scenic hiking trails, rugged gorges, and the chance to spot native wildlife. There are options for both casual strolls and more challenging treks.
Whilst there isn’t a Camp Kitchen here, you’ll still find a spacious undercover BBQ area with tables to enjoy your meal at.
