The communal camp kitchen and BBQ areas are positioned to make the most of the lakefront setting, allowing you to prep dinner while keeping an eye on the water as the light hits the mountains. For an easy start to your day, there is a seasonal kiosk right at the park where you can grab a barista-made coffee and local treats before you head out.
When you are ready to explore the local food scene, a ten minute drive takes you to the heart of Wanaka. For your specialty coffee fix, find Fedeli. Tucked down a quiet side street, it is a local favourite for a serious brew and high-quality deli treats. Another great option is Scroggin, where the coffee is excellent and the interior reflects the local alpine environment. If you are looking for a standout dining experience, book a table at Bistro Gentil. It offers a modern take on French cuisine using seasonal Central Otago produce, paired with an extensive wine list and incredible views over the lake. For a casual meal with a range of healthy options, Big Fig offers a fantastic "slow food, fast" approach that is perfect for families. To soak up the local culture, grab a stool at Kai Whakapai. This iconic corner spot is the unofficial meeting place of Wanaka, offering a great atmosphere to watch the world go by.
With Lake Wanaka right at your doorstep, your days will likely revolve around the water. The park features its own boat ramp, making it incredibly easy to launch for a morning of water skiing or fishing. If you prefer to stay on the shore, the lakefront is ideal for swimming or simply setting up a chair to admire the view. For those who brought their bikes, Bike Glendhu is located directly across the road. This world-class mountain bike park offers trails for every skill level, from gentle family loops to technical descents, all with some of the best vistas in New Zealand.
For a change of pace, the drive into Mt Aspiring National Park is essential. You are perfectly positioned to access the trailhead for Roy’s Peak, one of the most famous hikes in the country, or the shorter walk to Diamond Lake for a spectacular lookout over the park. If you are visiting in the winter months, Treble Cone Ski Area is just a short drive away, offering some of the best off-piste terrain in the Southern Hemisphere. For a more relaxed local experience, head into town on a Thursday afternoon for the Wanaka Artisan Market. It is held on the lakefront and is the best place to find local cheeses, preserves, and handmade crafts while enjoying the community vibe.
Glendhu Bay is a traditional "unplugged" style park and is one of the few places where you can still secure a site right on the water's edge. Because of this prime lake access, boat trailer parking can get tight during the peak summer weeks.
Check In is 2pm and Check Out is 10am for cabins and 11am for sites.
Pets are welcome after Waitangi Weekend in February until the week before Christmas.
