Perth to Margaret River: The Perfect 4-Day Campervan Trip

Western Australia’s South West is ideal for short road trips. In a few days, you can leave Perth behind for classic Indian Ocean beaches and head deep into forested wine country.

This four day campervan itinerary takes you from Perth through the Peel Estuary, down to Busselton and into the Margaret River hinterland. The final day sees you drive back into Perth.

Distance: 3 stops, approximately 670 km total drive

🚐 Campervan Hire Recommendation

If you need to hire wheels for the journey, an Indie Campers campervan is well suited to this route and timeframe. Indie Campers is a great fit for this trip thanks to its pickup depot near Perth Airport, making it ideal for fly-in travellers who want to get on the road quickly. The vehicles are modern, straightforward, and easy to drive on Western Australia’s roads, and the simple, hassle-free booking process makes it particularly well suited to short itineraries where convenience matters most.

📍 Stop 1: PEEL ESTUARY / MANDURAH REGION

Where to stay?

Estuary Hideaway Holiday Park

Estuary Hideaway Holiday Park is an ideal first night stop after leaving Perth. Set along the Peel Inlet, it offers calm water, abundant birdlife, and a peaceful, nature-rich setting that helps you switch out of city mode quickly. The flat, accessible sites are particularly well suited to campervans, making it an easy and relaxing place to settle in for your first night on the road.

What to do, eat and drink?

Spend the afternoon exploring Mandurah’s foreshore and estuary walking trails. Dolphin sightings are common in the estuary, particularly at dawn or dusk. The Mandurah waterfront has plenty of casual dining options, perfect for an early dinner before settling in for the night.

This stop is just about getting out of the city and taking some time to slow things down.

What’s the onward drive?

To the next stop in Busselton, you’ll travel roughly 136 km, taking around 1.5-2 hours. The drive is straightforward and can be broken up with stops in Bunbury or along the coast if you wish.

📍 Stop 2: BUSSELTON

Where to stay?

Breeze Busselton Holiday Park

Busselton is one of the South West’s most iconic coastal towns, and Breeze Busselton Holiday Park is a practical, well located base close to both the foreshore and Busselton town centre. It is particularly campervan friendly, with clean, well maintained facilities that make it easy to settle in and explore the area without needing to drive far.

What to do, eat and drink?

A visit to Busselton Jetty is essential. The surrounding beaches are ideal for swimming when conditions are calm.

Busselton has no shortage of food options, from relaxed beachfront fish and chips to casual cafés in town. Our favourite spot for a bite or drink with a view is The Goose, located right on the foreshore.

What’s the onward drive?

The drive into the Margaret River region takes around 1 hour (90 km). You’ll notice the scenery change quickly as the coastline gives way to farmland, forest, and winding country roads.

📍 Stop 3: MARGARET RIVER HINTERLAND

Where to stay?

Molloy Hideaway Holiday Park

Molloy Hideaway Holiday Park is a standout choice for travellers who prefer nature over town centres. Set inland among forest and river country, it offers a peaceful, immersive base while still providing easy access to the Margaret River region’s wineries, breweries, and forest walks. Quiet, starry nights make it an ideal place to stay with a campervan.

What to do, eat and drink?

Use this stop as your Margaret River base. The region is known for its wineries, breweries, distilleries, and local producers, many of which are within easy driving distance. Balance tastings with short walks through forest or time by the river to keep the day relaxed.

This is not a destination to rush. Pick a handful of quality stops and leave space to explore. Make sure to visit the tallest lighthouse on mainland Australia (Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse). It’s where the Southern and Indian Oceans meet.

What’s the onward drive?

From Molloy Hideaway, allow approximately 3.5 to 4 hours to return to Perth and the Indie Campers depot in Hazelmere.
