Nothing can quite replicate the joy of exploring the world with the kids by your side, seeing their eyes light up as they discover something new. Here is an itinerary showcasing the best of family friendly activities and destinations in South Coast NSW.
Distance: 3 Stops, 262 km total drive distance
📍 STOP 1: HUSKISSON
Where to stay in Huskisson?
Holiday Haven Huskisson Beach is one of our favourite parks in Australia and is as family-friendly as it gets. Located right on Huskisson Beach, kids are spoiled for choice activities-wise and will tire themselves out bouncing between the on-site pool, playground and spider park. There’s also a tennis court and racquet, ball and court hire are all available at reception.
What to do, eat and drink in Huskisson?
There are stunning beaches everywhere in this location and the short drive to Hyams Beach is well worth it to experience the white sands and turquoise blue waters but there is some small swell occasionally. For younger kids still wanting a swim without the swell, Moona Moona Creek is a safe and shallow waterway that's perfect for kids of all ages to swim and play. If you want to get a bit further away from the shore and take in some nature, we highly recommend Dolphin Watch Cruises, a tour company that offers Dolphin Cruises and Whale Cruises depending on the time of year. Running for 90 and 120 minutes respectively, these are great chances to connect with nature that won’t test the kids' patience too much.
What's the onward drive from Huskisson to Tuross Head?
Head south for just over two hours and after 150km on the road you'll find yourself in picturesque Tuross Head.
📍 STOP 2: TUROSS HEAD
Where to stay in Tuross Head?
Tuross Beach Cabins & Campsites is ideally located on the picturesque Tuross Beach and has a range of cabin options as well as larger-than-usual 65 square metre sites. All powered sites are level and many are in absolute beachfront locations offering unobstructed ocean views of Montague Island, the beach, inlet and Tuross Lake. We love that if we don’t feel like getting into the ocean but still feel like a dip there is a pool available on site.
What to do, eat and drink in Tuross Head?
The Tuross Boatshed & Cafe is a great spot for a quick meal at any time of the day before renting whatever gear you desire to explore the water. Paddle boats, kayaks and motorboats are all available, and younger kids will love feeding the fish off the edge of the deck. If you’ve brought your bikes with you the Tuross Lake Bike Path is a great spot to cruise along with the whole family and stop at the playgrounds along the way.
What's the onward drive from Tuross Head to Tathra?
Roughly one and a half hours further south is our next stop, Tathra. The town of Bermagui is approximately half way and well worth a stop whether it's for a meal and to stretch your legs, or to stay a few nights if you have time.
📍 STOP 3: TATHRA
Where to stay in Tathra?
With its premium beachfront location and welcoming atmosphere, NRMA Tathra Beachfront Holiday Park is the pick of local accommodation choices. Welcome to all ages and with plenty of space, this is the sort of place you’ll feel comfortable with your kids running around in, knowing that you’re surrounded by like-minded people. With an absolute beachfront location on a patrolled beach, this is a great spot for the kids to safely go for a swim.
What to do, eat and drink in Tathra?
In a beautiful beachside location like this, we know the kids are going to want to spend as much time as possible in the water and Tathra Beach is a family-friendly beach with clean sands and gentle waves, perfect for kids to swim and build sandcastles. Post swim, head over to the historic wharf where kids can watch fishermen, see local marine life, and enjoy ice creams from the cafe. Are your youngsters adventure seekers? Tathra has a great skate park and it is located just 500m from our accommodation option of choice.
What's the onward drive?
This is the end of this itinerary, but if you are keen to extend your trip further south we highly recommend the towns of Merimbula, Pambula and Eden, all of which are within 200km of Tathra.
